Preventive Care Benefits Included in Colorado Health Insurance Plans
Preventive Care Under Colorado Health Insurance Plans
Every health insurance plan that’s sold in Colorado must include certain preventive care benefits that are covered 100%.
Patients have access to numerous screenings and other preventive care – without having to pay deductibles, copayments, or any other charges for many types of preventive care, as long as it is received from an ACA-approved network provider
What’s covered?
The Department of Health and Human Services defines preventive health care to be treatments and tests that are scientifically shown to benefit good health. This definition has opened the door to a very long list of treatment and screening services, from cancer screenings to prenatal care.
Women’s Wellness
Women’s wellness and prevention – from mammograms to prenatal care – are 100% covered. Cancer screenings, contraception, domestic violence counseling, and even breast pumps are covered for women.
Healthy Child Coverage
Health plans within the approved network of providers must include 100% coverage of children’s health services such as screenings for childhood illness, immunizations and behavioral development. These requirements also apply to Medicaid.
Children under the age of 26 can stay on their parents’ insurance, even if the child is:
- Not financially dependent on their parents
- Not living with their parents
- Eligible to enroll in their employer’s plan
- Attending school
- Married
A child who is pregnant, however, is not covered under the parents’ plan for maternity or prenatal care.
Dental Care Exclusions
Even though the ACA defines dental health as an Essential Benefit, health insurance carriers aren’t required to offer it for adults. Adults will need to find dental benefits within another health plan, or in a separate, stand-alone dental plan.
Dental coverage will be included as an essential benefit under preventive care for children. It will either be included with their health coverage, or offered as a separate plan depending on your state and zip code.
What’s on the list of preventive services?
Preventive services are important for the early detection and prevention of disease at all stages of life, from childhood through adulthood. Lifestyle choices also factor in heavily when considering preventive care.
Preventive care under the ACA includes counseling and treatment plans for maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and substance abuse counseling. A comprehensive list of childhood vaccines is also covered by the new health care plans. We’ve put together a complete preventive care list that includes all of the benefits that are available.
Doctors can treat, but can’t really cure many degenerative diseases. We believe that prevention – primarily via lifestyle measures like diet and exercise – is critical, along with screenings for early detection.
